The Great Resignation and Entrepreneurship

Launching a new business is becoming more popular than ever before. In 2021, a surge of people quitting their jobs was dubbed “The Great Resignation.” In August alone, 4.3 million Americans quit their jobs — that’s almost 3% of the entire workforce.

Many experts believe that entrepreneurship is a major driving force behind this employment trend. After all, working for yourself gives you greater flexibility in work hours, which has certainly become more important as Americans juggle ever-changing schedules for in-person work for themselves and schooling for their children.

I happen to know a few things about starting a business out of a need for flexibility and taking care of family…way back in 2002, before it was cool or even acceptable to work from home, I was looking for a way out of the 9 to 5.

I’d had a great career in higher education, but I was longing for more flexibility so I could take care of my family without having to keep up with the full-time schedule and demands of a fast-paced career.

Enter entrepreneurship…

I took a leap of faith and left my full-time job with plans to start my own  freelance  marketing/PR  business.

I  was  so  excited  that  I  leapt  into  my  new venture  without  regard  for   research,   planning,   funding   or   realizing how tough it really  is  to  start  a  business.  I  just  knew  I  was  good  at what I did.

For the first several years in business, I really struggled.

As I was slowly trying to build my business, I met this guy named Michael Port, who was speaking at a conference I attended. He had written a book called “Book Yourself Solid®” and I was really impressed with his presentation.

I read the book and quickly started implementing the simple business building system outlined in his book.

Low and behold, my freelance business started to grow. Before I knew it, I had all the clients and income I wanted (and I only worked when I wanted and where I wanted, so I could spend quality time raising my children).

A few years later, Michael announced he was offering a coach certification program for Book Yourself Solid®. I had always been interested in coaching, so I signed up for the training program immediately.

And no, I couldn’t really afford it, but I also couldn’t afford  NOT to do it. I immersed myself in learning from Michael  and  the  other members of the group.

I’ve been enjoying the freedom and flexibility of entrepreneurship ever since.

Over the years, I have coached and trained some really amazing business owners.

Since the start of the pandemic and the “Great Resignation” I see more and more people opting to leave the 9-5. After all, working for yourself gives you greater flexibility in work hours, which has certainly become more important as Americans juggle ever-changing schedules for in-person work for themselves and taking care of family demands.

However, most people start like I did – jumping into the new venture without regard for   research, planning, or realizing how tough it really is to  start or grow a business. Most end up closing their doors within 2-3 years.

But it doesn’t have to be that way…

So, IF YOU’VE DECIDED that NOW IS YOUR TIME that you are ready to start your business or grow your business, and you are so done with playing small and wondering if you can really do this, let’s jump on a call and see if the Book Yourself Solid® program is your best next step.
